Keep The Sabbath Holy | The Fourth Commandment

When God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, the workweek at that time was seven days, as most people were slave laborers. This commandment is proved to be the very first step in ending slavery and is arguably the basis of the compassionate treatment of animals.

In the age of Moses there was ‘livestock driven power’. If man’s resting and not working the fields via the strength of animals or hauling various supplies … then the animals are also resting.

Overall: God commands us to keep the Sabbath because it reminds us we are more than our work and He made man to be free.

However, ask yourself … Is your Sunday (the Sabbath) any different and / or God-honoring than any other day of the week? If you answer 'No', you may not be properly fulfilling this commandment.

Today’s song is an easy-to-listen-to reminder of this basic commandment.

God has showed me

What I should be doing once a week

Not to rush about but take some time out with my family

On this day God has given, we should honor him

With our time with our lives with everything

I will keep the Sabbath holy

Give God praise because he's worthy

Take some time to rest and remember

All God has done for me

As Dennis Prager says, keeping the Sabbath holy is “life changing, even world-changing,” because it reminds us we are not made to be slaves to our work, and we should live in the freedom granted to us by God, emphasize relationships—particularly with our family—and be a humane and compassionate people who honor Him.

Old Testament

Exodus 20:8 - "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."

New Testament

Luke 4:16 - "And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read."

For a summary perspective of understanding the Fourth Commandment, watch Dennis Prager of Prager University explain the power of the Fourth Commandment to change your life is no less real today than it was for our ancient ancestors.
