Genesis Chapter 9 speaks of the covenant God made of setting His bow in the cloud as a token of a covenant between Him, every living creature and the earth after the great flood.

Genesis 9:11 – “And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.”

An extraordinary and beautiful “rainbow was promised by God not only to Noah but for perpetual generations.

Genesis 9:12-14 - "And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:"

It has long been said that a rainbow is an arc of 7 colored bands that develop when sunlight interacts with raindrops. Perhaps. But perhaps it is God bringing a cloud, opening heaven and reflecting His Light on the 12 foundation walls made of jasper, sapphire and other precious stones? Interestingly, an internet search revealed the full spectrum of colors in a rainbow is made up of 12 distinct bands, from top to bottom of the arc: Red, Orange, Yellow, Chartreuse Green, Green, Blue-Green, Cyan, Azure (blue), Violet, Purple, Magenta, Red. (Red is the first and last color of the rainbow spectrum. It has the longest wavelength visible to the human eye.) But as is typical for science, there are varying degrees of opinions on the number of colors of the rainbow, and some say humans aren't capable of seeing the full spectrum.

Our God is a God of numbers. Along with potentially 12 bands in a rainbow, it is fascinating to note that heaven has a great wall with 12 gates, at the gates 12 angels, as well as the names of the 12 tribes of Israel written there. Don’t miss that this is described in Verse 12!

Revelation 21:12 - “And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:”

In Revelation Chapter 4, the Apostle John describes God’s heavenly throne having a rainbow around it.

Revelation 4:2-3 – “And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.”

No matter how many colors it contains, God’s rainbow is absolutely stunning and is a constant, visible reminder of His promise. Lately there are some in society using God’s rainbow to symbolize sexual sin. Christian, don’t let the world interfere with the beauty of God’s symbol of His covenant. Now and forever, the rainbow symbolizes God’s promise!
