My All in All

If you were to describe Who Jesus is to you, what words would you use? Who is He to you personally?

The Book of Psalms (in the Old Testament) is a collection of lyrical poems by multiple authors. The psalms, or songs, encourage us to praise God for Who He is and what He has done; they illuminate the greatness of our God, affirm His faithfulness and remind us of the absolute authority of His Word.

Some of the psalms name the author in the first line or title. David was responsible for at least seventy-three psalms; here’s how he described our Lord in the 103rd Psalm:

Psalms 103:8-12“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. 10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”

In the 86th Psalm, David praises the Lord:

Psalms 86:8-13“Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works. 9All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name. 10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone. 11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. 12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. 13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.”

The author of today’s hymn describes Jesus beautifully …

You are my strength when I am weak, You are the treasure that I seek.
You are my all in all!
Seeking You as a precious jewel, Lord, to give up I'd be a fool!
You are my all in all.
Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your name!
Taking my sin, my cross, my shame; rising again, I bless Your name!
You are my all in all.
When I fall down, You pick me up; when I am dry, You fill my cup.
You are my all in all!

“You Are My All in All” was written in 1992 by Dennis Jernigan, a Christian singer-songwriter from Oklahoma. Jernigan shares his life story in concerts and church programs around the world. He and his wife, Melinda, were married in 1984 and live with their nine children on a small farm in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Listen to David Phelps and the Gaither Vocal Band sing the beautiful rendition (Canon in D), Live.

Is Jesus your everything, your All-in-All? He is worthy to be praised!
