Water is an important part of our physical lives … we need it to survive. Jesus is the Living Water for our thirsty souls and we need Him in order to survive and live with Him eternally in heaven.

‘Water’ is mentioned hundreds of times in the Bible. The symbolism of water is a significant part of our Christian walk ... salvation, eternal life, the Holy Spirit, sanctification, God’s Word and much more.

John 4:14 - “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Artist/writer Beckah Shae's song, “Holy Water," tells about the eternal water of Jesus --
"Dead man walking, slave to sin, do you want to know about being born again? Lord, Your forgiveness is like sweet, sweet honey on my lips; like the sound of a symphony to my ears; like holy water on my skin. I don’t wanna abuse your grace, God, I need it every day! It’s the only thing that ever makes me want to change. I need You, oh God, I need You!"

Water also represents the power of God.

Water is vital to life … yet it can drown you if you don’t know how to swim.

Water can be destructive.… like the flood in Genesis (Gen. 6)… or the lack of water can dry up land (Ps. 63:1) and make it useless.

Water represents the Spirit of God.

The Holy Spirit moves upon the face of the waters just like the wind does.

Genesis 1:2 – “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

Water baptism is a picture of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection.

Spiritually-born Christrians (those who have been saved by the blood of Jesus) are immersed in water and baptized as an act of obedience after salvation, as a public profession of their faith. Immersion pictures burial in the likeness of His death, and being raised up out of the water pictures the likeness of His resurrection.

Jesus performs a miracle and walks on water (and included Peter in the miracle too).

Matthew 14:28-29 – “And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.”

There are so many stories involving water in the Bible. As you read daily, notice the different roles water plays.

John 7:38 - “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

Yes, we all need water, but drink the water of Jesus and never thirst again!
