Biblical Marriage
Marriage -- what does God's word have to say about it?

In the Bible, 'marriage' is used to represent the union between God and his people.
Isaiah 54:5 - “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”
Ephesians 5:25 explains how the marriage union represents the love of Christ to His children, the same love husbands are to have for their wives – “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;”
Titus 2:4 exhorts women to love their husband and family – “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,”
Marriage isn’t just “I Do” with a piece of paper to make it ‘legal’, it is a covenant between man, woman and God.
Ephesians 5:31 - “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” Matthew 19:6 - “Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
Following biblical principles will bring deep happiness and contentment in your marriage. Spending quality time together, reading and studying the Bible together, praying together, and expressing gratitude will nurture your relationship. The marriage union requires effort and commitment from both husband and wife to maintain and grow this joy throughout their years together.
If you think combining money and marriage can be a recipe for disaster, you’re not alone. Deciding together how finances will be handled prior to marriage is wise; pre-marital counseling with your local pastor is a good idea, as well. According to Dave Ramsey, "money is the number one issue married couples fight about, and it’s the second leading cause of divorce, behind infidelity." Mr. Ramsey gives these tips about money and marriage:
Marriage is a team effort, so combine your money into one account and make every financial decision together.
Talk openly about your lifestyle and goals—then build a budget that reflects your shared values, not your wish list.
Personality and income differences can be strengths when both spouses fully participate in budgeting and decision-making.
Be honest about spending, debt and expectations so you can build trust and stay on the same page.
Don’t let the kids run the show—let them see you are on the same page by making decisions together about how to budget for their needs as well as teaching them how to earn and wait for the extras.
If you are married, think back to your wedding day and the love that brought you to your spouse. If you are single, be assured that God has someone special for you … in His timing.
Be aware that satan wants nothing more than to destroy marriages and families. Don’t fall for His lies and stay true to God and your spouse. When you disagree with one another, agree to walk away, go to another room alone and pray. Ask God to help you see things from His perspective. Return to talk things over once you both have calmed down. Don't give up until the problem is solved and you both agree on the solution. Remember, it is satan, not your spouse, who seeks to cause relationship problems. Point your finger at him (satan) and tell him to get out of your house and stay out of your marriage!
Do you pray with your spouse? 1Peter 3:7 explains how important it is for couples to pray together. Here are some tips and a short video clip. It takes time to become comfortable praying together. Be sure to watch the clip on the blue link above.
