In the Bible, attributes associated with motherhood are commonly seen as comforting, nurturing, forgiving, guiding and loving … all expressions of God. Mothers have a unique and crucial role in the lives of their children ... being a mother is a blessing. A mother’s love reflects that of God – selfless, enduring and unconditional. A mother’s most important role is to teach her children about God and the Bible.
Eve was the first woman and the first mother in the Bible. Her name means "living thing" or "life." Eve experienced fellowship with God before sin and the fall, so she probably knew God more intimately than any other woman after her. Sarah was one of the most important women in the Bible. She was the wife of Abraham, which made her the mother of the nation of Israel. She shared in Abraham's journey to the Promised Land and all of the promises God would fulfill there. She was barren, but then she conceived through a miracle in spite of her old age. Her faith serves as a shining example for every person who has to wait on God to act. Mary was the most honored mother in the Bible, the human mother of Jesus, Who died for our sins. Although very young, Mary was a humble peasant who accepted God's will for her life. She suffered enormous shame and pain, yet never doubted her Son for a moment. Mary stands as highly favored by God, a shining example of obedience and submission to the Father's will. Can you think of other mothers in the Bible?
If you are blessed to have a mother, honor her today – by thanking God for her; and if she is living, call or visit her and tell her how much she is appreciated and loved.
If you are blessed to be a mother, thank God for the privilege -- and follow His command to teach your children about the Bible and His plan of salvation.
