Billy Graham once said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Sadly, many fathers today are not living up to their biblical responsibility (and often thankless role) of “father,” largely due to a cultural breakdown of man’s role as head of the family.

DADS: You matter! Father's Day is Sunday. Happy Father's Day to all the fathers!

Let's look at what the Bible says about the man's role and fatherhood.

1Corinthians 11:3 - “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”

Men are not better or above women, they merely serve a different role. Each role in the family is equally important. Males and females were created by God differently, each with unique functions in the family unit. Women cannot replace fathers just as fathers cannot replace mothers.

The importance of a father’s role cannot be overstated. Not only do fathers provide protection and economic support, their parenting style is significantly different from that of a mother. Dads play “rougher” and are more likely to encourage risk-taking. They also tend to stress rules, justice, fairness, and duty in discipline, teaching objectivity and consequences of right and wrong. They give kids insight into 'the world of men' and prepare them for the challenges of life.

1Thessalonians 2:11-12 – “As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, 12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.”

In the Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 6, Moses reminds the nation of Israel about the covenant they made with God, and the statutes and judgments the LORD taught and commanded them to do. Not only were they commanded to do them, but they were commanded to teach them diligently to their children

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 - “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

King Solomon, the son of David, King of Israel was the wisest man ever. He was inspired by God to write the Book of Proverbs, sharing wisdom with his son Rehoboam. It was during Rehoboam’s reign that the nation split into two kingdoms and Rehoboam eventually became king of Judah, fortifying cities and raising up leaders. We, too, can learn much from reading the Book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 6:20 - “My son, keep thy father's commandment ..."

One of the most important things a father can do for his children is to love their mother. Kids are constantly watching and learning, not only from your relationship with God, but your relationship with one another. Kids learn by example, and with a parenting team, a child feels loved unconditionally, safe, balanced and nurtured.

Teach your children biblical values and even if it doesn’t seem like they’re listening, they will eventually heed your advice. Keep this promise from God in your heart:

Proverbs 22:6 - “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Another gem from Billy Graham ~ “The greatest tribute a boy can give to his father is to say, ‘When I grow up, I want to be just like my dad.’ It is a convicting responsibility for us fathers and grandfathers.”

Amen, Mr. Graham. Amen!
